[Guest Blogger] Developing a Spiritual Life

WorshipRecovering from a serious illness or a profound life event can be a time of confusion and uncertainty when every suppressed emotion rises up to tear us down. Choosing to include a spiritual side to your life may feel overwhelming, but at the same time we know that a spiritual life is a worthwhile choice. We may wonder about the practicality of it. How can we live spiritually when everything around us is based on the material world?

Although personal and spiritual growth comes from within, most people appreciate the friendship, support and companionship of belonging to a religious affiliation or spiritual center. Through a spiritual relationship with a higher power, you will feel good about yourself and discover the peace and joy of abundant living. Spirituality can provide you with a foundation to go back to no matter what happens in your life. Furthermore, the power of prayer helps us experience a stronger connection with God every day.

Mindfulness

As you begin to create your new life, consider building a foundation for your spiritual self. Be mindful of what you are doing and of where you put your attention. Mindfulness helps us stay connected to our priorities. What brings us peace and joy is the foundation of our inner priorities: being spiritual lead, speaking our truth, and treating others with loving kindness. You will find that your inner priorities are more important than your outer priorities. Treat yourself with compassion when you fall down on your priorities.

Daily devotions

The Joy of Loving: A Guide to Daily Living consists of messages written by Mother Teresa and compiled by Jaya Chalika and Edward Le Joly. This guide for daily spiritual living includes messages for each calendar day and is useful to both the believer and the nonbeliever. The authors write…

“Mother Teresa speaks as the conscience of the world. She is a lighthouse for believers, sending rays of light that show the way in semi-darkness. And to nonbelievers in God, she is an anchor steadying their ship in rough waters.”

An easy way to get started is to begin each day, by opening this book and reading an inspirational message from Mother Teresa.

Ministry groups, retreats, broadcasts, podcasts and Apps

Consider meeting with the pastor or the spiritual leader of your local church if you have questions about how to proceed with your spiritual journey. There are many ministry groups, retreats and bible studies in your local community that can offer you the opportunity to make caring friendships with like-minded individuals.

You may also develop yourself spiritually through books, music, broadcasts, podcasts, blogs, Apps and tours of your favorite spiritual leader. Unique Daily Affirmations, a downloadable App for your cell phone, may keep you inspired to continue on your path to positive living. Let your curiosity lead you on your spiritual path. Reach out and connect with others as you explore your spiritual self.

Planting Seeds — and Allowing God to Make Them Manifest
by Becky J. Benes

bluebonnetsDriving through the hill country the past two weekends was an awe-inspiring experience. There was no spot where the majesty of God’s beauty, brilliance, and abundance was not in full view. Over each hill was yet another panoramic view which took my breath away.

As I spoke to the hill country natives about the bluebonnets, they were quick to say, “Well, we did not have any last year!”

“Really,” I said, “there were no bluebonnets?”

“That’s right, none!” they would say.

I pondered this as I drove in continued amazement of the blanketed fields of hues of blue, red, green, yellow and white.

I began to ask, “Where were you last year?” “How can you be ‘no-where’ last year and ‘now-here’ in such abundance this year?”

This is the insight I received…

  • We (the blue bonnets) were here all along, just lying dormant, resting, taking a break, rejuvenating ourselves.
  • We were here, just not visible to your eye.
  • We were here, just waiting for a bit of moisture and coolness.
  • We were here, just patiently waiting to burst forth with new life and vibrancy.
  • We were here, just waiting to surprise you, to dazzle you with our brilliance, to take your breath away.
  • Even though you did not see us, we were here.

Wow, how many times do I forget that what I experience with my senses is not all that there is? There is a realm of the invisible, the unknown, the mystery of God-Creation all around me of which I may not be aware.

This is a powerful message for me in the area of trust in reaching my goals and objectives. I sometimes feel as if I am in a drought, going nowhere, stagnant and dull, whether in my life, my business, my marriage, my parenting, my friendships, and/or my writings. I am not seeing, hearing, touching or experiencing the fruits of my labor.

Have you ever felt this way?

This trip through the hill country, helped me to remember, that it is my role in life to plant the seeds, to take the action, to be obedient and to do well what I am called to do. I am to put forth my best in my work and my action (my seeds) and allow them to unfold into the majesty and brilliance that God has planned for them.

It is up to God — the Invisible Force of All Life to deliver the outcome.

The exciting thing is that, just as with the bluebonnets, one moment the seeds we plant seem to be no-where and then suddenly they are now-here. At first, they show up in patches and then all of a sudden they blanket entire valleys and fields.

Consider the message of the bluebonnets as a message of hope for you in your life and your business.

As an authentic leader, if you have a dream, follow your heart; don’t lose sight of the end result. Know that the power of the Universe-God is working in the realm of the unseen to make your desire come into fruition. It may take a bit longer to see, to feel, to smell and to touch but know that it is God’s great pleasure to give you the keys to the kingdom.

We all have the seeds of greatness within us, which we are called to plant and to disperse these seeds out into the world for the greater good of all.

What are your seeds? Are you planting them?

It is something to consider — what seems no-where is probably now-here.

[O.W.W.L Journey] Guest blog post on a vital insight – Compassion!

I love to feature my clients and their brilliance in my posts! Her first book, Triumph of the Heart: Forgiveness in an Unforgiving World, launches from Penguin this summer. You can pre-order it here, and visit her here.

Self-Compassion: Why it Matters

Showing_CompassionMost of us are harder on ourselves than we are on others. Why does it matter? Research shows that people who are able to forgive themselves are happier in their relationships and perform better in work and play than their more self-blaming peers.

A few weeks ago I was trying to will my newborn to sleep. I’d changed him, fed him, and burped him, so why was he still wailing? By 6 a.m., I hadn’t slept and was losing my mind. I actually emailed my husband, who was asleep in the other room, and titled my message, “Please shoot me.” He soon found me sobbing and unable to form an intelligible sentence. He took one look at our son and said, “It looks like he’s cold.” That was it. He was cold. He needed more clothing, and once we put some on, he went right to sleep.

I felt like an idiot. But then I stopped myself. If I kept up the self-flagellation through every minor oversight, the next 18 years would be hell for all of us (and visiting his mother in a mental hospital would certainly be embarrassing for the poor kid). I’m certainly not perfect at self-love, but I’m getting better. On another recent night, after I accidentally spilled a container of all-too-valuable breast milk, I just laughed at my delirium, cleaned it up, and moved on. Life is so much easier when we stop wasting time berating ourselves and remember to have a sense of humor. Not to mention, give ourselves the kindness and compassion we would give a friend.

Remember to give yourself a break today! What can you forgive yourself for today?

The thing that is really hard and really amazing, is giving up on being perfect and beginning the work of becoming yourself. ~ Anna Quindlen
