[Current OWWL Journey] Balancing work and family

Balancing-work-and-familyWhen I realized things were in turmoil with my girls in November, my first response was to drop everything and focus on them – finding therapists, holding family meetings, and doing research on the condition. My business was doomed to take a back seat. Work/family balance did not an seem to be an option.

However, with the strong coaching of my mentors, I realized this was not an “either/or” decision. It was a “both/and” decision. The opportunity to help people heal from within to be their most excellent selves is a daily occurrence within my business, so why couldn’t I also be building my business while helping my family heal?

I am happy to report that steady improvement continues to occur with my granddaughters and daughter. I am also happy to report that I remain committed to my business growth, my clients, and my self-care.

These circumstances have helped me grow in so many ways. Thank you for your support.

[O.W.W.L. Success Tip] One-Second Cure for Resentment, Guilt, and Anxiety

self_love_lIf you have been reading my Current Journey blogs on Thursday’s at www.JanisPullen.com/blog, you know that my life has been challenging and grief-stricken since my November discovery of family trauma. I am supporting my daughter and teenage granddaughters in working through fears and solutions. My husband commented recently that if people knew what I was doing to help, they would line up in droves to hire me as their coach! As always, I share with you my success tips which come from my life and my expertise. Today’s tip comes from an episode that occurred this week.

[O.W.W.L. Success Tip] Dwelling on the past produces resentment and guilt. Fear of the future produces anxiety. You can easily shift these in seconds. (Click to Tweet)

Of course, if you learn something productive from events and feelings in the past, it’s helpful in not making the same mistakes again. But if you are reliving what someone did to you or what you did wrong, then dwelling on the past cripples you. If you look to the future to plan and prepare with excitement and anticipation, that provides direction and structure. But if you focus on your fear of the future, anxiety can be paralyzing. My girls all have resentments, guilt, and anxiety in many forms, as do most of us, so when the most recent breakdown episode occurred, I implemented two techniques:

  1. When my granddaughter was stuck in her past/present context which had her filled with rage and simultaneously paralyzed with fear of the future, I brought her back to the here and now. In other words, I had her touch her skin and report the temperature. I had her tell me what the floor felt like under her feet. I asked her to talk about the clothes she was wearing and what her hair felt like. Getting grounded in physicality helps us to come back to the present moment. What do you feel, what do you see, etc.? There is no past or future in the now. Bringing focus to what is here and now regains your personal power.

(How would this practice help you when you are stuck in the past or the future fears?)

  1. To change emotional state we must change physical state. So I had my granddaughter stand up and follow me, running around the house as I ran ahead of her. The increase activity, heart rate, and breathing as a change of physical state (not to mention to audacity of me running with slippers and a robe asking her to catch me) brought her back to the present and to her power.

How would changing your physical state help you to get back into your personal power?

Each of these activities takes only seconds of your time and focus. I would love to hear how you implement this for yourself!

[Guest Blogger] Remember to Make Time for Fun

playtimeAt the end of the year, I usually reflect back on what I accomplished, whether I’m happy, and where I want to be next year. For me, 2014 was a very busy year filled with travel commitments, publishing deadlines, and starting a new business. It felt like I was working seven days a week – weekends, evenings, mornings, and afternoons. I enjoy my work very much and really wanted to reach my goals by year end, but at what cost? If we end the year feeling burned out then what good are we?

When you’re self-employed, you don’t have the same structure in your day as someone who works a conventional 9 to 5 job. Carving out time for fun requires discipline. It begins by establishing Time Rules. This is about the quality of your choices and your commitment to them. Plan ‘work’ days, ‘buffer’ days, and ‘free’ days into your schedule. Work days are for focusing all of your energy into what you do best – your main job. Buffer days are for loose ends like dealing with tech bugs, social media updating, paying bills, making appointments, and returning emails. Free days are for experiencing pure fun like holidays, vacations, party celebrations, sleeping in, nesting at home, trying new recipes, and shopping without a list. On free days, you simply unplug and have fun. That means no technology. When you make a commitment in your calendar to have free days you allow yourself to be free to experience what is.

Here’s a list of fun things to try in 2015:

  • Learn to play a musical instrument like the piano, the guitar or maybe even the trombone.
  • Read an old classic such as Little Women, Gone with the Wind, or The Grapes of Wrath.
  • Go mountain climbing, hiking or take a long forest walk.
  • Attend an open mic night at the local comedy club and meet new people.
  • Put on crazy hats, big glasses and feather masks. Then crowd your family into one of those mall photo booths for a fun picture you’ll always treasure.
  • Gather a few friends together and play soccer, basketball, bocce ball, or miniature golf.
  • Learn a new language. Then plan a trip to practice your new skill in a foreign country.
  • Instead of walking the neighborhood, try skipping and galloping. You may get some funny looks, but you can chuckle too while burning major calories!
  • Go roller skating and bring back this wonderful childhood memory!
  • Try a new look ~ cut your hair, color your hair, or get hair extensions. Donate your old clothes and then treat yourself to some colorful, hip, modern clothes that will make you feel young again.
  • Take a train ride to a town that you’ve never visited. When you arrive, explore the village and see what you can find that’s fun and new.
  • Try a new sport like kayaking, surfing, sailing, skiing, paragliding or even raising honey-bees.
  • Go camping! Take a portable stove, sleeping bag, and a small tent and leave technology behind.

Whatever you decide to do in 2015, be sure to carve out time in your schedule to have fun, to laugh a hearty laugh, or just to be silly every once in a while.

Happy New Year!

[O.W.W.L. Success Tip] Ready to Shed your Financial Weight?

2015_hnyHappy New Year!

Are the expenses from the holidays weighing your down, or are you still in Scarlet O’Hara mode…“I’ll think about that tomorrow!” Have you made a New Year’s Resolution to get your finances in better shape and shed that weight of money? If so, you will want to know about this subconscious belief that weighs us down financially.

O.W.W.L. Success Tip: Make a decision now to shed your Financial Weight…(Click to tweet)

Money issues reflect powerful, cunning subconscious blocks toward living a successful and abundant life. One of the reasons I love coaching people on money is because I have been on a journey of self-discovery for many years and have learned how to create six-figure businesses. I love showing others how to do the same. Peeling back the next layer of the artichoke to get to the heart of what’s in our way to creating wealth is a vital step in the process.

Yesterday a client in Texas had a huge money breakthrough when we uncovered her sabotages. She sets financial goals, and then “things” get in the way to prevent her from reaching them. She has disempowering beliefs about herself and money, so she looks for evidence that those beliefs are true (excuses why she can’t succeed). Those beliefs and excuses hold her back from making the money she desires. After our coaching session yesterday, her beliefs are no longer on the subconscious level. She now knows what to do about it. She now knows that 2014 will be much more prosperous for her.

Would you like to break through to a new income level and lower your debt in 2014? One way to shed the financial Weight of Money is to give yourself the gift of our 90-day group Weight of Money Breakthrough Coaching Program. We address practical action steps and subconscious mindset shifts for a very reasonable investment. [Current OWWL Journey] Celebration of my birthday – and yours

birthdayI wrote about this recently, and it bears repeating. Lack of celebration holds us back from reaching our goals with speed and power. If we are always stressed out about not doing enough, accomplishing enough, or having enough, then we haven’t been celebrating enough either!

Celebration brings out the joy and the flow of life. There are many ways to celebrate ourselves, whether it be for an accomplishment, a good effort, or a special day. Celebration and acknowledgement do not have to involve spending money; however, they must include a celebratory attitude.

I didn’t always celebrate myself. I always saw what hadn’t been done or what mistakes I made. When I became an ontological coach, specializing in transformation from the inside out for permanent, positive results, I learned that celebration increases the velocity of obtaining results. So I went into the “should” of reward. Now I know that it’s about the joy.

I received a beautiful birthday card (my birthday was Sunday Dec. 14th) from my niece, Stephanie West, owner of Alchemy Marketing Inc. (www.alchemywebsitedesign.com) I had requested no gifts for my birthday or Christmas, but Stephanie knows the value of celebration. Her card said the following:

“I reflect the joy of who you are by telling you that I wish you some sweet surprises, new and wonderful adventures ahead, continued business success, and all the items on your wish list.”

Thank you, Stephanie! What a precious way that she celebrated me! Who will you celebrate? Who will you acknowledge today? How about yourself? Share your celebration ideas here…
