[Current OWWL Journey] Why Don’t We Keep Our New Year’s Resolutions?

New Year's ResolutionsHappy New Year! Are you shooting at a paper target or writing in stone? This time of year, so many of us have made New Year’s resolutions, and many of us have already broken them…or know we will. Whether we will keep or break a resolution can depend on the underlying context, or perspective, from which it was created and also on the level of integrity we practice with ourselves.

CONTEXT: If you make resolutions that involve “I should,” “I have to,” or “I need to,” you have already set yourself up to break your resolution, since you are not creating from an empowered foundation. The same is true if you are trying to control, judge, look good, or keep from looking bad. Example: “I have to lose 30 pounds before my high school reunion.” You may or may not indeed take off the 30 pounds, and chances are good that you will gain them back after the reunion is over.

In contrast, empowered perspectives, or contexts, include purpose, vision, commitment, promise, choice, self-value, and self care. Example: “Since I see myself as healthy, energetic, and fit, I resolve to take exquisite care of my body and to release the 30 extra pounds that I no longer choose to carry with me.” Here you have empowered yourself and your choice to take the weight off and to more likely keep it off.

INTEGRITY: Which of these words describes your New Year’s resolutions?

  • Resolution: The thing determined upon; decision as to future action showing a fixed, firm purpose
  • Goal: An object or end that one strives to attain; aim
  • Commitment: Binding, as by a promise or pledge to do something
  • Promise: An oral or written agreement to do or not to do something; vow; basis for expectation
  • Pledge: Security for the performance of a contract, guarantee, promise, agreement
  • Vow: Dedicating oneself to an act, service, or way of life; solemn affirmation or assertion or declaration

What is your relationship to these concepts? In other words, if you make a promise to yourself, what is the likelihood that you will break it? If you set a goal, what is predictable…will you attain your goal or will you quit before you cross the finish line? Do you practice high levels of integrity with commitments you make to others but commitments to yourself dissolve at the first obstacle?

As we move forward into the new decade, consider making resolutions from an empowered, purposeful, vision and practicing high-level integrity to and for yourself. I then predict your experience of life will expand in power, joy, and fulfillment.

Joyful New Year,

Success Story:

As a coach trainee in the Ontological Weight Loss (O.W.L.) Coach Certification and Training Program, I recently received coaching from two of my buddy coaches who are already certified in this program. They were both skilled and powerful coaches, which reflects the high quality of this program. I am glad to be a part of it.

[O.W.W.L. Success Tip]: How to Receive the Gifts of Peace, Joy, and Serenity this Season

peace-love-joy-christmasI have been thinking of you all recently. Have you been feeling stressed out lately? Are you up to your ears in travel, family, spending money, cooking, or any other “to do’s”? Would you like to know how to give yourself the gifts of Peace, Joy, and Serenity?

O.W.W. L. Success Tip: Decide not to let the outer world dictate your stress reactions.

We have no control over events, people, or circumstances. What do we have control over? We can control the meanings we give things and the relationship we have to stress. In other words, we can’t control the outer circumstances, but we can control how we think about them – our inner world.

If you are making this busy time mean stress, frantic, over-worked, and anxious and if your relationship to stress is that it’s bad, here are my tips for shifting to Peace, Joy, and Serenity:

  1. Clean up your vocabulary…use “busy, excited, productive” instead of “overwhelmed, stressed, too much to do.”
  2. Be curious about why you are stressed out. Is it because you don’t think you’ll be appreciated, loved, or respected if you don’t get it all done? Is it because of unrealistic expectations? Is it because you think you have to be perfect? Is it because you are judging others or yourself? What’s all that about?
  3. Declare that you will not be stressed out, and look for alternatives to make things easier. Take a stand for yourself.
  4. Take good care of yourself.
  5. Ask for support everywhere. Separate, alone, and hard is one of the sabotage patterns we learn to dismantle in the Janis Pullen and O.W.L. coaching programs.
  6. Shift criticism to gratitude. Isn’t this self-explanatory? An attitude of gratitude for everything everyday creates the Peace, Joy, and Serenity you want.
  7. Adopt a mantra such as, “All is well” to practice daily.
  8. Contact me at www.JanisPullen.com to schedule a complimentary coaching session.
  9. Consider hiring a life/business/health coach as a gift to yourself.

I believe you can have a wonderful holiday season and finish your year with grace and ease. I believe you can have the calm and love you want. You are a precious gift to those who love you.

Please take care of you.

[Guest Blogger] Why Are Superfoods Important?

Scientists have discover that certain foods, superfoods, are rich in essential fatty acids, antioxidants or fiber which are vital to building a healthy body and a strong immune system. These foods have also been proven to lower total cholesterol, lower blood pressure, help protect against heart disease and cancer, help regulate blood sugar levels and metabolism and burn body fat.

The process of converting your diet over from one of processed foods to one that contains mostly superfoods can be daunting. As long as you are clear in your head that you are committed to giving up your old ways of eating, then you will succeed by putting imaginary blinders on your eyes whenever you see junk food. Instead, your eyes will twinkle with delight when they see heaps of beautiful, farm fresh fruits and vegetables.

Below is the list of 10 superfood groups and their benefits:

  1. Olive Oil
Regularly consumption of olive oil can help lower total blood cholesterol, fights against diabetes, osteoporosis, and cancer, and decreases blood pressure levels. For those with dry skin, it’s an excellent way to cleanse your skin, as well.
  2. Garlic
Garlic lowers total cholesterol and blood pressure, lessening the risk of heart disease. It also destroys infection-causing viruses and bacteria.
  3. superfoods

  4. Red and purple foods
Blueberries, blackberries, cranberries, grapes, pomegranates, red cabbage, red peppers, strawberries, and tomatoes. These amazing foods contain antioxidants that fight cancer, reduce blood pressure, and lower bad cholesterol.
  5. Beans and lentils
Beans and lentils, low in fat, calories and sodium but high in dietary fiber, are an excellent source of protein.
  6. Orange foods
Apricots, cantaloupe, carrots, mangos, oranges, persimmons, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and tangerines provide fiber and may control blood pressure and normalize heart function. They protect your vision, encourage a good mood, fight cancer and keep your bones strong.
  7. Green foods
Broccoli, brussel sprouts, green beans, green cabbage, green peppers, edamame, kale, parsley, spinach, and spirulina. Green foods have beneficial effects on cholesterol, blood pressure, immune response and cancer prevention.
  8. Hot peppers – sweet bell or hot chilies
Chilies are high in antioxidant carotenes and flavonoids, and contain about twice the amount of vitamin C found in citrus fruits. Hot peppers aid with digestion, an improved immune system, and better blood circulation and digestion.
  9. Nuts and seeds
Nuts and seeds dramatically decrease your risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes, and reduce the visible signs of aging like wrinkles and sagging skin.
  10. Sprouts
Sprouts are a “living food” that continues to produce nutrients after being harvested. They are the most enzyme-rich food and they have a higher nutritional content than any other food.
  11. Yogurt and kefir
Probiotic foods are primarily yogurt and kefir. They increased bone strength, lowered cholesterol, create a stronger immune system, and improve digestion.

[Current OWWL Journey] My book progress is slowed up by my vicious critic

the-voice-inside-my-head-is-a-liarAs you may have heard, my book, ‘Lose Weight for Life, 9 Reasons You Can’t Keep the Weight Off and What to Do About It’, is in the revision process. (Still thinking about that title.) I have a commitment to have the book ready for publication by December. The only problem is that I have a vicious and destructive voice inside my head telling me it is crap and that no one will buy it, much less read it.

Do you have an inner critic inside of you? Mine shows up everywhere, not just in the book – writing process. She speaks louder when something is really important to me, when my possibilities are huge.

My book project manager, Bethany Kelly, happens to be an ontological coach as well. < Her advice last week was brilliant:

  • Dialogue with my critic.
  • Ask her what she needs.
  • Ask her what her messages for me are.
  • Give her acknowledgement and gratitude.
  • Ask her what she wants me to know.
  • Accept all of me, including the critic.

I share this with you so that you may also dialogue with your inner critic. I will post next week on what I have learned.

[OWWL Success Tip] Change

changeHow do you relate to change?

My sister began rearranging furniture and throwing out old magazines, evoking her husband’s grumpiness and upset. He doesn’t like change. My friend jumps from one multi-level marketing company to another when something “better” comes along. She loves change.

Change in business niche, direction, expansion, contraction, as well as in personal arenas, has entailed growth and evolution for me through the years, but with my reluctance and courage every time I left a comfort zone. What is your relationship to change?

Success Tip: Embrace change as growth and evolution, but don’t jump at each “shiny object that comes along.”

My pattern of change has been to stay with something longer than I should have, long after I knew better. But I second guessed myself and analyzed things to death. Then, when the time was right and my courage was greater than my fear, I made the change with 100% commitment, not looking back (mostly). So, no, I’m not a person to jump at every new, shiny opportunity. And, no, I don’t get stuck forever. My careers have evolved as follows:

  • college drop out
  • housewife/mother
  • college graduate with Master’s Degree
  • C.P.A.
  • Senior Sales Director, Mary Kay Cosmetics
  • Life, Business, and Executive Coach
  • Founder – Ontological Weight Loss Programs: Your Once-in-a-Lifetime Solution
  • Founder – Weight of Money Breakthrough Programs
  • Founder – Coaches’ Certification and Training Programs
  • NEW CHANGE: Janis Charlton Pullen – Mastery Coach in Ontological Wealth, Weight, and Leadership
