[Guest Blogger] Why Are Superfoods Important?

Scientists have discover that certain foods, superfoods, are rich in essential fatty acids, antioxidants or fiber which are vital to building a healthy body and a strong immune system. These foods have also been proven to lower total cholesterol, lower blood pressure, help protect against heart disease and cancer, help regulate blood sugar levels and metabolism and burn body fat.

The process of converting your diet over from one of processed foods to one that contains mostly superfoods can be daunting. As long as you are clear in your head that you are committed to giving up your old ways of eating, then you will succeed by putting imaginary blinders on your eyes whenever you see junk food. Instead, your eyes will twinkle with delight when they see heaps of beautiful, farm fresh fruits and vegetables.

Below is the list of 10 superfood groups and their benefits:

  1. Olive Oil
    Regularly consumption of olive oil can help lower total blood cholesterol, fights against diabetes, osteoporosis, and cancer, and decreases blood pressure levels. For those with dry skin, it’s an excellent way to cleanse your skin, as well.
  2. Garlic
    Garlic lowers total cholesterol and blood pressure, lessening the risk of heart disease. It also destroys infection-causing viruses and bacteria.

  4. Red and purple foods
    Blueberries, blackberries, cranberries, grapes, pomegranates, red cabbage, red peppers, strawberries, and tomatoes. These amazing foods contain antioxidants that fight cancer, reduce blood pressure, and lower bad cholesterol.
  5. Beans and lentils
    Beans and lentils, low in fat, calories and sodium but high in dietary fiber, are an excellent source of protein.
  6. Orange foods
    Apricots, cantaloupe, carrots, mangos, oranges, persimmons, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and tangerines provide fiber and may control blood pressure and normalize heart function. They protect your vision, encourage a good mood, fight cancer and keep your bones strong.
  7. Green foods
    Broccoli, brussel sprouts, green beans, green cabbage, green peppers, edamame, kale, parsley, spinach, and spirulina. Green foods have beneficial effects on cholesterol, blood pressure, immune response and cancer prevention.
  8. Hot peppers – sweet bell or hot chilies
    Chilies are high in antioxidant carotenes and flavonoids, and contain about twice the amount of vitamin C found in citrus fruits. Hot peppers aid with digestion, an improved immune system, and better blood circulation and digestion.
  9. Nuts and seeds
    Nuts and seeds dramatically decrease your risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes, and reduce the visible signs of aging like wrinkles and sagging skin.
  10. Sprouts
    Sprouts are a “living food” that continues to produce nutrients after being harvested. They are the most enzyme-rich food and they have a higher nutritional content than any other food.
  11. Yogurt and kefir
    Probiotic foods are primarily yogurt and kefir. They increased bone strength, lowered cholesterol, create a stronger immune system, and improve digestion.

[O.W.W.L. Success Tip] Awesome opportunities always drop in her lap – here’s why

daisiesI recently spoke with Cynthia, a California friend of mine in the Human Resources and Leadership Development arena in corporate America. Since I’ve known her, she has had fabulous opportunities drop into her lap (her words). I reflected this to her and asked to what she attributes this recurring pattern.

O.W.W.L. Success Tip: Ask yourself if what you are doing today is getting you closer to where you want to be tomorrow?

Cynthia’s reply was, of course, brilliant, so I wanted to share it with you. Here is her wisdom, which is deeply spiritual:

  • She never loses hope and faith. Ever. She has a strong belief that everything is in divine order.
  • She always looks at the first step – the one she doesn’t want to take. Too often, she says we jump ahead too soon to the second and third steps, instead of taking the first step that we don’t want to take but need to take. It usually deals with doing the inner work.
  • She practices NOT questing after goals, in other words, not striving, worrying, working too hard, and struggling (my words) after it. Instead, she says God already knows what we want. She says the gift will come and will beg you to say yes to it. You don’t have to quest after it.

Sounds like life could be easy, fun, and in the flow for us as it is for Cynthia. Which of these three steps will you take next? For me, the steps I will take are making friends with my inner critic and not losing faith. (Check out my blog posts on October 23 and October 30 about my dialogue with the inner critic.)

yoga-phrasesAs an Ontological Coach I was divinely-inspired in 2008 to create the “Ontological Weight Loss (O.W.L.): Your Once in a Lifetime Solution” programs, workshops, and books which address the nine sabotage patterns I have identified and how to shift them permanently. (Ontology is the study of the being of a human being, including conscious and subconscious behavior patterns.)

The sabotage patterns for weight loss are also applicable for other areas of your life: money, career, relationships, hobbies, etc. You may be running some or all of the sabotage patterns and don’t even know it. Ways to shift your sabotages: You may start to immediately identify your own sabotage patterns just by being present and aware. How do you hold yourself back? Where do you get off track? What is underneath that?

Once you know what you’re doing, an easy way to shift sabotages can begin with doing just the opposite. This method is simple enough, but it is often difficult to do without guidance, unless you have someone you trust to help you through the process. We don’t always recognize our own “stuff.”

[OWWL Success Tip] Have you made an assumption?

assumption_quoteOne of my clients called for emergency coaching recently, worried sick about an upcoming circumstance and was afraid of what might happen. She was tempted to turn to comfort foods or to “retail therapy” to subdue her anxiety. I recognized immediately the sabotage of “making assumptions.”

OWWL Success Tip: “Assume” means “making an A** out of U and Me.

I asked this client to distinguish her interpretations vs. the actual facts, the emotions vs. the factual details as a newspaper reporter would report. We found that she was making many assumptions about what had happened and what might happen.

Once she stated the facts as a reporter would, she realized that she had over-dramatized and was living in an uncertain scary future that had not yet happened or might never happen (“what if…”) instead of living in the true here and now.

FEAR is an acronym for False Evidence Appearing Real. It appears real because of our interpretations and assumptions. Your practice of focusing on the actual facts will direct you toward serenity, peace, and empowerment. Drama queen can go back to sleep, and your food or money program can stay in integrity.

[Current O.W.W.L. Journey] Stepping into a larger market – please read and help me

Please help me. I made a bold decision last week to expand the direction of my business and now need to connect with a new group of people to share my platform. Because you are in different walks of life, you might know such a person. Here’s the scoop and my back story:

I have decided to take my Ontological Weight Loss (O.W.L.) coaching and training programs to a “larger audience” (no pun intended). I have been working with overweight individuals and couples via private and group coaching since the inception in 2008 of O.W.L. Weight Loss: Your Once-in-a-Lifetime Solution and the launch of the Weight Loss Coach Certification and Training Program in June 2013. (I opened by business and life coaching business 9.5 years ago.)

how_the_workplace_contributes_to_obesity-resized-600The “larger audience” is businesses, corporations, health providers, internal coaches/trainers, and independent coaches/trainers who want to assist employees and/or clients in improving their fitness levels once and for all. I would like to be involved with corporate wellness programs by training and certifying other trainers/coaches in the O. W. L. body of work.

Research shows that obesity in the workforce costs companies directly and indirectly in terms of higher insurance premiums, lower productivity, and higher absenteeism, not to mention biases and prejudice in hiring, retention, and employee relations. I want to make a difference in helping companies improve their bottom line (again, no pun intended), as well as taking my work global.

My vision is to help people worldwide who struggle and suffer with weight to drop the weight permanently with grace and ease, to experience peace, and to love themselves unconditionally. My vision is also to support people in having successful, prosperous businesses. Both of these visions will be met with my new expanded business direction.

I figure I can always do research and make cold calls, but that is less effective than knowing someone who knows someone. Here are the areas in which I would love, love, love a contact (someone with a name and phone number would be the best):
