[Current OWWL Journey] Good news with fitness and weight

My plan is working! I realized recently that I didn’t want to be old, fat, or frail as I age. (Yes, I will age, as we all will, but I don’t have to be an “old” old person. Do you know what I mean?)

Here I am at my first yoga lesson last week with my instructor, Sydney with the fitness studio Body Language, and my friend Karen Stilson.

Here I am at my first yoga lesson last week with my instructor, Sydney with the fitness studio Body Language, and my friend Karen Stilson.

So I shifted my exercise priorities from “comfortable and easy” to “fit, healthy, and strong.” You have probably seen some photos of me on Facebook: after my first yoga class and on a 3-hour hike. If not, please check them out. I also shifted my approach to eating priorities to reflect the new mantra of “fit, healthy, and strong.” In just a few weeks, I have noticed the definition in my triceps and the strength in my quadriceps improving. This morning as I dressed, I realized that the belt I wear often needed to be cinched in by two notches. My weight is also dropping. Good news, indeed, that my plan is working!

In our O.W.L. Weight Loss and O.W.L. Certification & Training Programs, we talk about our “Big Why,” otherwise known as our “Vision” in our Customized Strategic Design Plans. When I dropped the 50 pounds 20 years ago, my Big Why was to compete in Latin and Ballroom dancing looking fabulous with a younger partner. Now I want to take it to a new level, because my Big Why is to age with…you guessed it…fitness, health, and strength.

What is your Big Why in what you are doing, whether it be weight, health, business, finances, or anything else? I would love to hear from you about your Big Why.

Sincerely,

Success Stories:

kristenowens2testI enrolled in the O.W.L. Coach Certification & Training Program because, as a holistic nutritionist, I am already offering the facilitative portion of weight loss (food and movement). I know that the emotional side of weight loss is, I believe, the most important part of the process.

I found it very exciting to experience in the clients I enrolled within the program (one enrolled even before I started the program!) the transformations they saw in their weight and also in other areas of their life. How you do weight is how you do everything! These sabotage patterns really do work in every area of life: money, weight, health, relationships.

I was enrolled to learn how I can service my clients in a bigger way, but I also got value for myself. I was able to apply these tools into my own life even though weight is not a concern they shifted my thinking and how I see myself.

If you are thinking of whether you should enroll, I will make it easy for you…just do it! You will benefit more ways than just one. For you to be a fantastic coach you must transform yourself first! That will just happen and will be fun and easy at same time.

[Success Tip] Create appropriate action steps, and take them one step at a time

onestepDo you become overwhelmed in trying to reach your goals? Do you give up before you get there?   Does your plan seem hard or energetically heavy?  Do you become paralyzed or inefficient with the enormity of your project?  If so, it might be because you are not making and taking appropriate action steps.  Whether you want to earn $1,000,000 this year or you want to take off 100 pounds, the key is the same:

Success Tip: Create appropriate action steps, and take them one step at a time.

In many years of coaching, I notice a common tendency for people to stall out or slow down instead of making steady progress, due to overwhelm from a huge goal.  Here are some tips to transform this pattern:

  1. Realize that sitting back and waiting is not appropriate action.  That is being victim to circumstances.
  2. Shift from being victim to being at cause by creating specific, bite-sized, baby steps that move you forward.
  3. Schedule the steps in your calendar.
  4. Be accountable to someone (your coach?)
  5. Create new habits by choosing just one thing to shift, and stick to that until it becomes automatic.
  6. Then choose one more thing, and do the same.

Here are two examples:  An O.W.L. weight loss graduate gave up one thing – sugar.  She kept eating everything else as usual.  As time passed, she gained the confidence and strength to address something else.  An O.W.L. Certification trainee wanted to bring in additional clients but was afraid to call a lot of people.  She scheduled and called one person a day to practice having conversations until she gained the confidence to increase her activity.  “One step at a time” is the key!

Success Story

Deb before & AfterOne of the most important results O.W.L. has produced for me in addition to weight loss has been an incredible confidence when it comes to my professional life. When I first started my business, I felt frumpy; and wanted to hide out where no one could see me because I felt so overweight. I hid behind my desk, behind my baggy clothes and by being quiet, not seeking the clients I knew I needed for my business to succeed. After entering O.W.L., I began to see how eating and weight gain were part of my hiding out as well. The holistic approach the O.W.L. Program affected not just weight, but my whole essence, and resulted in me feeling strong, confident and owning my strengths and abilities – and that has meant a huge increase in clients and income.

[Current OWWL Journey] Are you harvesting before you sow?

thrive-300x284I had two breakthroughs this week: Summer Hours and Harvesting /Sowing.

Summer Hours: After a long, cold winter and a long, windy spring I especially love the beautiful weather now. I don’t want to jump out of bed and hit the ground running. I want to take a long walk, enjoy conversation on the patio with my husband, and take extra time to work out. I also want to take long weekends to enjoy hiking, camping, picnicking, and cookouts.

But with responsibility of making a living, I thought this was impossible. Then I remembered that I was my own boss, and I get to choose my own hours! I also remembered that well-being is one of the pillars of success. (Check out my blog post on Arianna Huffington’s Thrive on Tuesday, June 10.) I also remembered that a few years ago when I thought I had a heart attack, I cut back my hours with NO decrease in my business.

So I have declared Summer Hours for my business. I reduced my hours per day and reduced my work days per week. I did not change my annual goals for clients and income…

…which leads to my second insight…

Harvesting and Sowing: With the lethargy of “Spring Fever” and reduced hours comes a sense of guilt that I am not doing more or accomplishing more. I have tried to power through the activities to generate results, even though my heart was not there.

Then my breakthrough came: As in the “Parable of the Sower,” we must first sow the seeds before we can harvest. Some seeds will fall on fallow soil and not grow, some will be taken over by the weeds or scorched by the sun, and others will flourish and bear fruit. But no matter which seeds do what, we must sow first and then trust that some will flourish. That’s when we can harvest.

So when I become discouraged that a certain seed did not grow or be ready to harvest, I remember this parable. It’s time for sowing; the time for harvest will be right around the corner.

[OWWL Success Tip] Is your definition of success killing your business and maybe killing you?

definition of successDo you often feel stressed or overburdened? Does your life feel like it’s too jam-packed with to-dos and not enough purpose? Have you created a lifestyle that leaves you anxious, frustrated, or burned out? This lifestyle could be killing your business – or even you! Instead, how would you like to thrive, be successful, and create a life of well-being, wisdom, and wonder?

In our O.W.L. programs we teach that well-being is one of the pillars of success. So you can imagine my delight to learn of Arianna Huffington, Greek-American author and syndicated columnist. She is best known for her news website The Huffington Post. She was also named as number 12 in Forbes’ first-ever list of the “Most Influential Women In Media.” Her platform includes helping women redefine success for themselves.

O.W.W.L. Success Tip: Thrive, don’t just survive.

To help you do just that, Arianna Huffington, wrote the book Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonder. It offers a number of strategies you can use to bridge the gap between knowing what you could be doing to thrive, and actually doing it rather than just agreeing with but not implementing these principles in your own life. In addition to making sure you’re getting sufficient amounts of high-quality sleep, Arianna recommends incorporating the following strategies in your day-to-day life:

  • Meditation. It can be as short as five minutes to start. Simply allow your thoughts to come and go, returning your focus to your breath without getting caught up in your mind’s meanderings. The purpose of mindfulness meditation is to simply be “fully present” in the moment. This is where you can notice how you really feel, and connect with who you really are, deep down.
  • Sweeping your mental corridors. She also suggests making the conscious decision to drop negative or judgmental thoughts and anxieties at the end of each day. If the thought or feeling does not serve you, let it go.
  • Practice gratitude. Keeping a daily gratitude list of the many little blessings in your life can help you shift your focus to how good your life is instead of dwelling on the challenges. “If we can redirect our mind to focus on the blessings, I find that I feel much more joyful and much more filled with energy,” Arianna says.
  • Connect with others face-to-face. Start making personal connections with people you come across every day that you might have taken for granted – it could be the cleaning crew in your office, the checkout clerk, or the barista in the coffee shop. Connecting with people face-to-face will allow you to become more present in the moment, and more connected with the rest of humanity. It also helps you tap into empathy and compassion—two emotions that often fall by the wayside when you’re too stressed and disconnected to even notice the world around you.
  • Do one thing at a time. Multitasking is an illusion. Research shows that multitasking is actually task-switching, and it’s very stressful. It also promotes anxiety. If you can walk down the street, and really just walk, without texting or talking on the phone, it will connect you with the moment. You will be able to notice the sunset, a flower, the design features of a building, or the smiling face of a baby.

My wish, as Arianna’s, is for all of us is to live a life of Well-being, Wisdom, and Wonder AT THE SAME TIME WE ACHIEVE SUCCESS.
What is one thing on her list that you could do today toward this end?

Sincerely,
