[OWWL Success Tip] Do you eat the crumbs?

In working with my business, weight, and coach certification clients, I often find that they are settling for crumbs.

O.W.W.L. Success Tip: Don’t eat the crumbs when you can have the whole banquet (the “whole enchilada” in New Mexico terms)!

crumbsWhy are you eating just crumbs? Do you think you don’t deserve to have it all? Or do you think you have to take what you can get? Do you ask for what you want? Or do you hope that someone else will toss you a morsel?

A relationship counselor told me once that I could list the qualities I wanted in a relationship, but I couldn’t have them all. I fired him. I thought I deserved to have it all.

My life coach client didn’t think she deserved more, so she settled for a man who criticized her and drained her energy. He had some good qualities in the mix too so she tolerated the criticism. I told her, “Love doesn’t hurt. The man who loves you wants to uplift and uphold you, not bring you down.” Yes, this client can have a man who respects and cherishes her for exactly who she is. She doesn’t have to settle for the crumbs. (And he is a crumb.)

My coach certification client didn’t think she could succeed, so from desperation she attracted a client who was late to coaching sessions, wouldn’t do assignments, and paid late. I asked her, “Why do you put up with this? Our ideal clients empower us as coaches and work with us as a team.” This crumb was NOT an ideal client. This coach was settling for crumbs.

An advanced coach training client doubted her abilities to grow her business, so she charged way too little and over delivered way too much. When I asked her to quiz her clients about the value she provided to them, their answers proved that she had been settling for the crumbs.

It’s our mindset that causes us to settle for less than we really want. Our beliefs get in our own way. In what ways are you compromising yourself by settling for only the crumbs? What are the disempowering mindsets or beliefs about yourself that allow it to happen? What is one thing you can do right now to change your mindset? What is one crumb that you will no longer settle for so that you may enjoy the full banquet?

[OWWL Success Tip] Is your definition of success killing your business and maybe killing you?

definition of successDo you often feel stressed or overburdened? Does your life feel like it’s too jam-packed with to-dos and not enough purpose? Have you created a lifestyle that leaves you anxious, frustrated, or burned out? This lifestyle could be killing your business – or even you! Instead, how would you like to thrive, be successful, and create a life of well-being, wisdom, and wonder?

In our O.W.L. programs we teach that well-being is one of the pillars of success. So you can imagine my delight to learn of Arianna Huffington, Greek-American author and syndicated columnist. She is best known for her news website The Huffington Post. She was also named as number 12 in Forbes’ first-ever list of the “Most Influential Women In Media.” Her platform includes helping women redefine success for themselves.

O.W.W.L. Success Tip: Thrive, don’t just survive.

To help you do just that, Arianna Huffington, wrote the book Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonder. It offers a number of strategies you can use to bridge the gap between knowing what you could be doing to thrive, and actually doing it rather than just agreeing with but not implementing these principles in your own life. In addition to making sure you’re getting sufficient amounts of high-quality sleep, Arianna recommends incorporating the following strategies in your day-to-day life:

  • Meditation. It can be as short as five minutes to start. Simply allow your thoughts to come and go, returning your focus to your breath without getting caught up in your mind’s meanderings. The purpose of mindfulness meditation is to simply be “fully present” in the moment. This is where you can notice how you really feel, and connect with who you really are, deep down.
  • Sweeping your mental corridors. She also suggests making the conscious decision to drop negative or judgmental thoughts and anxieties at the end of each day. If the thought or feeling does not serve you, let it go.
  • Practice gratitude. Keeping a daily gratitude list of the many little blessings in your life can help you shift your focus to how good your life is instead of dwelling on the challenges. “If we can redirect our mind to focus on the blessings, I find that I feel much more joyful and much more filled with energy,” Arianna says.
  • Connect with others face-to-face. Start making personal connections with people you come across every day that you might have taken for granted – it could be the cleaning crew in your office, the checkout clerk, or the barista in the coffee shop. Connecting with people face-to-face will allow you to become more present in the moment, and more connected with the rest of humanity. It also helps you tap into empathy and compassion—two emotions that often fall by the wayside when you’re too stressed and disconnected to even notice the world around you.
  • Do one thing at a time. Multitasking is an illusion. Research shows that multitasking is actually task-switching, and it’s very stressful. It also promotes anxiety. If you can walk down the street, and really just walk, without texting or talking on the phone, it will connect you with the moment. You will be able to notice the sunset, a flower, the design features of a building, or the smiling face of a baby.

My wish, as Arianna’s, is for all of us is to live a life of Well-being, Wisdom, and Wonder AT THE SAME TIME WE ACHIEVE SUCCESS.

Q_ComplaintHave you been wondering why people are marketing so much through email, and are you wishing it would all stop! Well, it won’t stop, and in this article I’m sharing some empowering tips to handle it all.

O.W.W.L. Success Tip: Resistance if Futile!

We have always been exposed to sales and marketing, even from the moment our mom tried to get us to take the bottle or breast and later when she urged us to eat our broccoli. In my cosmetic sales business we learned you could use telephone, telegraph, or tell-a –woman to share new products.

When something is wonderful, we want to share it with as many people as possible, and we share with whatever means of communication we have at our disposal. Through the evolution of communication, sales and marketing techniques have evolved. Snail mail campaigns and brochures have evolved to email campaigns and websites. Paper catalogs are now on line. Written word has evolved to include audio and video.

Most of us are now online, and our in-boxes get a daily workout. Here are my recommendations for handling all of this:

  • Don’t resist; just know that online marketing is now a normal part of our culture.
  • If you don’t want to read something, don’t read it.
  • If you enjoy the style and/or the informative messages/training from someone who is doing email marketing, don’t unsubscribe when the program or product launch emails arrive. If you do, you will miss out on the other valuable support. Simply delete the emails that you don’t wish to read, or perhaps read those that could be passed along to someone else.
  • If you don’t like the style and/or the informative messages/training from someone, then by all means unsubscribe to their list. Just know that they can’t send you anything else after that, not even the good stuff, unless you re-subscribe yourself.

The main point I want to underscore is that this is not negative; it’s how people share with other people.

To those of you who have stuck with me as I learn how to navigate this area, thank you! And if you unsubscribe from my emails, I will try not to feel rejected! 🙂
