[My Current Weight Loss Journey] The flu! I missed two days of eating…a miracle?

holiday fluI am recovering from the flu over the holidays. I never knew that you could actually miss two days of eating unless you were in love or on a fast! Yet, my appetite totally disappeared. What do they say…”Feed a cold; starve a fever”? Well the fever wanted to be starved, because I couldn’t imagine eating anything last week and am still having trouble looking forward to anything but soup. It wasn’t stomach flu either.

Although I felt irritated at first about being ill, including the inconvenience and suffering involved, I feel grateful in some respects, because my body is now cleaned out and rested. It’s as though my body was signaling me to rest and to also give my digestion a rest so that I could have a jump start of energy and focus in January.

What is your relationship to illness? Do you get annoyed? Do you view it as a time to lay low and heal? Do you allow people to serve and support you? I’m interested to hear your reflections.

My Current Weight Loss Journey: Week 8 I Want to be Like Everyone Else

I attended Girls’ Night Out recently where we meet at a home and bring covered dishes for dinner. I notice that when I attend something like GNO, or Ladies Bunko, or a neighborhood party, I always behave in one of two ways:

I either tell myself I am restricted from eating the naughty things or I tell myself I can eat whatever I want.

This is definitely an “All or Nothing” mentality. In the O.W. L. Programs, we call it the “Either/Or” context.

Ok, so I already know this. I teach in the O.W.L. weight loss and money programs how to dispel the Entitlement/Deprivation sabotages. I also teach regularly how to shift to a “Both/And” context. What is interesting to me is why it comes up for me.

I hit the nail on the head today! I want to be like everyone else. I want to fit in. I want to be liked. If I am uncomfortable and not fitting it, I numb my feelings by eating the wrong stuff or else I become Nazi lady and eat nothing. If others are eating a bunch of junk, I want to eat it too.

On the other hand, if I hang around people who eat healthily, I want to do that too. At a recent GNO at my home I invited a friend who dropped 50 pounds last year with my O.W.L. support. Being very committed to keeping it off (see the Keep It Off Club at www.owlweightloss.com/programs/keepitoffclub/ for information on that program), she brought a veggie tray as her contribution, thus giving me “permission” to fit in by eating vegetables instead of the other more fattening foods.

So here is my weight loss work this week: I must ignore my inner, insecure, people-pleasing saboteur and remember to tell myself, in the words of an old “Saturday Night Live” character, Stewart Smalley, “I’m good enough; I’m smart enough; and dog-gone-it, people like me!” By the way, I’ll weigh tomorrow and give you an update next time.

OWL Success Tip: Are You Feeding Your Flesh and Starving Your Spirit?

Have you ever wondered why some spiritual journeys involve fasting? In listening to a radio program recently, I heard someone say that when we overeat or eat the wrong foods, we are feeding our flesh while we starve our spirit.

Success Tip: If you want to be more connected and in tune with the spiritual (and emotional) parts of you, you must eat to feed your spirit.

What does it mean to eat to feed your spirit? Why would we even discuss this?

We are holistic beings, comprised of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual components. The food we eat affects all of these. You’ve seen it yourself. When someone is sluggish and drinks caffeine, they might perk up physically and also become more alert mentally. When someone is feeling sad or angry and eats sweet, salty, starchy, or fatty foods, they might shift their emotions to calmer or happier. When someone eats too much sugar, they have physical reactions like energy followed by a crash or diabetes.

Just as food impacts the body, mind, and emotions, it also impacts our ability to connect with our purpose, our bliss, and our love – elements of spirit. Spiritual voyagers know this and experience deeper connection from a fast. My O.W.L. Weight Loss clients know this too. When they eat the wrong stuff, they become disgusted, disconnected, and self-deprecating. When they eat the right stuff in the right amounts, the discover inspiration, purpose, and joy.

I’m not suggesting that you fast. I am suggesting that when you eat anything, you pay attention to what exactly you are feeding: Is it your flesh or your spirit?
